Utility Scammers

A new scam!

By now we have all heard about the phone/internet scams that give you a message about overdue or late payments of taxes.  Here is a new twist to that:  you get a call from your utility vendor saying you are many months behind and your service is going to be turned off if you don’t pay it within 30 minutes.

Just like with the IRS calls, these are a scam to scare you into making a payment right then.  Of course it goes to the scammers and not the utility.

Generally, just like with the IRS, you will get notices by mail before any utility shuts off your service so you can be confident that a call like this is a scam.  Don’t even pay for things over the phone to someone who represents you have an overdue balance!

Wonder what they will try next?
